About Me

"A significant part of the pleasure of eating is in one's accurate consciousness of the lives and the world from which the food comes." -- Wendell Berry

My name is Rachel. I am a lover to all things food and beverage. I am a recent transplant to Austin, Texas from New Jersey via way of New York City. I moved in hopes to find a way out of the restaurant business to be an edgy, indie musicmaker but instead found myself in Austin wanting to become a fancy food femme.

My credentials?
Professionally, I started in an ice cream store in Raritan, NJ at 14 and eventually moved to fancy tea house in Upper Manhattan called Alice’s Tea Cup. I waitressed there to fund a trip to Southeast Asia and ended up managing the gamut only to get out and land at Fino Restaurant. There, I spent my time serving, bartending, and being a general front-of-house monkey. After obsessing over classic cocktails and boutique booze for a year and a half, I managed to become a representative of all things spirits.

Personally, my obsessions have ranged through organic food movements, Farm Aid, vegetarianism, raw food, offal, baking, canning and jam-making, international cuisine, Italian home cooking, tea picking, Anthony Bourdain, vintage cocktails, food photography, and most recently, coffee and Old World wines.

Why a blog?
Well, I’ve spent all this time wondering where I fit in food by thinking I had to pick one of these many loves. Instead of choosing a baby, I’m going to talk about all of them. Right here.

Why food?
Having a degree in philosophy and religion, I’ve always wondered the deeper meaning of why food has meant so much to me. I’ve come to this conclusion: that food is something we eat all the time and everyday. It is our one and most common link to the earth. By this, I mean the dirt, the oceans, the animals, and seeds. I also mean the generations before us and the traditions passed down. I also mean our relationships with other people- whether they’re at the table with us or growing our food for us.

I just feel this cycle of sharing should be continued… so here you'll find the ways in which I hope to capture these experiences I have.
